FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
The holy season of Lent is now in
its fourth week or midway into Lent. It
began with a simple yet profound gesture—the imposition of ashes in the form of
a cross on our foreheads, reminding us of our mortality and the need for repentance.
In so many ways, it appears that sin
reigns supreme in our world. The
prevalence of violence, scandal, selfishness and cruelty towards others weighs
heavily upon us. We are reminded that through the discipline of Lent, ---
prayer, fasting, sacrifice and works of charity, --- it can help us overcome
sin and temptation in our lives. With
God’s help, we can rid ourselves of temptation and sin and become better
Christians.
Let us pray that this grace-filled
period of Lent will unite us sacramentally and prayerfully with the Passion and
Death of Jesus as we journey toward Easter.

Ed Lipinski

Examining Our Lives in Christ's Light
The Lenten scriptures introduce us to some of the most intriguing people in the Bible.
Today we first meet David, the anointed one, and then the man born blind. Both experienced God's extraordinary action-a power that took them from their ordinary lives and drew them into the kingdom work of proclaiming God's marvelous deeds.
.In a few short weeks, those who are now preparing for baptism will come to the Easter Vigil in response to the call-in today's second reading: "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light."
They are experiencing God's extraordinary action enlightening their lives before entering the Christian community.
Today is their second scrutiny, a precious gift both to those preparing for baptism and to all of us who share in the Sunday Eucharist.
The Christian community prays for the elect, asking for the purification of their lives, their liberation from all that is sinful, and their genuine conversion to Christ.
We ask God to give them the grace and the power to look carefully at their own life in the light of God's purpose, to recognize what needs to be taken away or changed, and to identify what can be strengthened in God's grace.
And we ask the grace of continuing conversion for each of us. This is the work of Lent, a work that brings light to us all.
