TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

            June, they say, is the month of Love.  In the past it had been the month of the most weddings and honeymoons and because of this, June was often referred to as “the month of the heart,” which is the symbol of love.

            The Church, in its wisdom, has taken up this theme and has dedicated the entire month of June to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  For it encourages us to meditate on God’s great love for us that is shown in Jesus Christ and especially in the symbolism of His heart.

            While devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus dates back to the 12th century the symbolism comes directly from the Gospel of St. John.  Following His crucifixion, Jesus’ side was lanced by a soldier who pierced His heart.  The blood and water which flowed forth was a sign of the birth of the Church and

outpouring of God’s forgiveness upon us all.

            Therefore, as Christian Catholics we are called upon to show special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.  Let us always remember that on more than one occasion we have received and experienced the love and mercy of the Lord.

            And so, during this month of June, we pray: may the Sacred Heart of Jesus challenge us to give witness to His love in our lives, by loving and forgiving one another as the Lord has done to us.

Please support the House of Charity/Bishop’s Annual Appeal.  Our Parish Goal is $13,000.  Thus far we’ve collected $11,095.  I am asking everyone to contribute something to the appeal.  Checks should be made payable to the House of  Charity and sent/brought to St. Joseph’s Church.  Please remember no donation is too small to give.  House of Charity donation/pledge cards are in the pews throughout the church.  Thank you for your support!

 

Father’s Day Collection Envelopes – please remember your fathers by placing their names on the special envelopes and putting them in the collection basket.  Our fathers will be remembered in all Masses during the month of June.

 

Divine Mercy Chaplet – please join us in the recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet after the 10:30 AM Mass next Sunday, June 15th, Father’s Day.

 

Sacred Heart Society – Holy Communion Breakfast for members will be held this morning after the 10:30 AM Mass in the lower parish hall.

 

Former students of St. Joseph’s Grammar School are invited to attend the 10:30 AM Mass on Sunday,  June 22, 2008.  Following the Mass, refreshments will be served in the lower parish hall.

 

St. Joseph’s Fund Raising Appeal – thus far we’ve collected $689,173.12 in pledges and cash donations from 947 donors.  The beautiful memorial Restoration Plaque listing the names of people donating $1000 or more on “in loving memory” of someone is now in place on the Mechanic Street side wall.
